Gary Shortland teaches figure skating in Charlotte, North Carolina.
He has been teaching full time since May, 2001, coaching
skaters of all ages and levels, from beginners to experienced
competitors. His focus is primarily on ice dance, moves
in the field, and choreography.
Gary began his figure skating training at age 9. Throughout
his career, he trained with coaching dignitaries such as Jimmy
Young, Betty Callaway, Russian Olympic coach Natalia Linichuk,
and his initial coach, Daphne Cronhelm.
With his first partner, Lucy Platt, and later on with his
second partner, Charlotte Clements, Gary competed in ice dance
competitions throughout the world. During his exciting career,
he competed throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia. For two
consecutive years, he and Charlotte won the senior British
National Dance Championships; they placed second while defending
their title for the third time. During his years competing
at the Senior International level, Gary had the opportunity
to work with the renowned Bolshoi Ballet choreographer, Shanti
Rushpaul.
